“Democracy and Development:
Challenges for the Islamic World”

6th Annual Conference
Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy

April 22-23, 2005
Marriott Wardman Park Hotel
2660 Woodley Road NW, Washington, DC 2008

Since the discourse on democracy usually takes place in an historical and contextual vacuum, CSID’s Sixth Annual Conference will examine the common barriers to development, identify factors needed to ensure proper economic and political development, and focus on the inter-relatedness of democracy and development in the Islamic world

In addition to exploring the relevance of economic and political development to democratic governance, this forum hopes to examine how the classical concepts of shura and ijma‚Äò lend themselves to the development of democratic institutions in today’s modern world and how traditional views on gender roles affect women’s participation in the political sphere.

Invited Keynote Speakers:

  • Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice
  • USAID Administration Andrew Natzios

This conference provides an opportunity to address these issues among others in the following panel sessions:

  • Internal Resources And Their Relevance
  • Paradigms For Economic Development
  • The Impact Of Globalization On Development
  • Women And Political-Economic Development
  • Barriers To Development

A tentative conference program will be posted soon.
